The Domain comprises approximately 44.35 hectares of recreation reserve, legally described as Section 19 and Section 33, Block IV, Lower Hāwea Survey District. It is accessed via Domain Road at the Gladstone Road end, and is bounded by rural land and Rural Residential zones.
The Domain was gazetted as a Recreation Reserve in two stages — in 1986 and 1998. For most of its century-plus as a public reserve it sat at a comfortable distance from the residential areas of Lake Hāwea township and Hāwea Flat. That is changing rapidly: new developments are moving ever closer, making the Domain more important than ever as open green space for a growing community.
